Chapter 13
- Theo wakes up the next morning and hangs out with his new friends at Jellinek's tavern. Theo tries to get going, but Florian tells him he can make a living as a public letter writer in Freyborg. When Theo dishes that, by sticking around as a fugitive, he might get the others in trouble, Florian says he's in just the right place—the others all seem to be involved some sort of mess, as well.
- From then on, Theo set himself up in Jellinek's tavern. People pay him to write letters, which they dictate to him, and in a way, he serves as a town psychologist—he hears everyone's problems. He ends up miserable on his clients' behalves for a while, but then he grows used to it.
- All of Florian's children are super-loyal to him. Theo isn't officially in that group yet because he hasn't been called "my child" by Florian, plus he doesn't feel like he's in Flo's confidence yet. Florian speaks freely (i.e., speaks out against things and people he doesn't like), but doesn't get in trouble.
- When the police come around asking about a runaway bad apprentice, Theo gets sweaty nervous. There's no need for the nerves, though, since Florian quietly suggests the police go away, and they do. People are afraid of Florian and whatever power he has.
- Theo thanks him and asks him what the point of his letter-writing job is, but Florian explains that Theo's work at least gives people some hope.
- When Theo asks how he can repay Florian for diverting the police, however, the response is much more cryptic: Florian basically just says, you'll see.
