Chapter 4
- Theo keeps on walking and is glad he hasn't run into anyone yet—he doesn't want to think about his violent impulses. Suddenly he sees a gray mare in front of him. It looks like both he and the horse are runaways of some sort, so he climbs up on her back… but since he's never ridden much, he soon hops off and they stroll on together.
- As they're walking along together, horse and boy come across a coach pulled over on the side of the road. Guess who? It's Count Las Bombas and Musket. The mare, Friska, is their horse that ran off.
- Theo tells the dastardly duo about the manhunt for him. When Theo sees a bunch of fake limbs, Las Bombas tells him about various schemes that he pulls. Theo thinks LB is a doc, but the count says he's a man of many trades—Las Bombas has even summoned the dead.
- The good doctor tells Theo not to be so judge-y of his schemes.
- A bunch of cavalry shows up, and since these guys could be on the hunt for Theo, Las Bombas gives Theo a disguise—he tells the boy to pretend to be a Trebizonian barbarian and not say anything.
- Las Bombas changes into a uniform and pretends to be a dude named General Sambalo to fool the soldiers. He tells the cavalrymen that Theo is an insane Trebizonian, and officers with horses make him mad. LB asks for money from the soldiers, which he says will pacify Theo, and the soldiers cough it up, then flee. Tricky.
- Theo agrees to become Las Bombas's assistant on the road. LB is a fraud, Theo knows, but he still likes the guy, so they take off, Musket driving, onto their next adventure.
