The times, they are a-changin'—or, in the case of Westmark, it's the people and their surroundings that are. Theo starts out as a naïve kid in the backwater town of Dorning, but by the novel's finale, he helps save the kingdom and rescue Mickle, who it turns out is the long-lost princess. Plus the kingdom itself transforms, shifting from tyrannical rule to—fingers crossed—benevolent monarchy by the book's end. In fact, we just might say that change as a general rule is only a good thing in this book… though Cabbarus might not agree.
Questions About Transformation
- How does Theo's opinion of himself change over the course of the book?
- How does Mickle transform herself, literally and figuratively?
- How does Las Bombas change himself from role to role?
- Are there any characters that don't evolve over the course of the book?
Chew on This
Theo's life has been so sheltered that he can't help but change a ton once he leaves home.
The only character who doesn't change is Cabbarus, and because of this, the book argues that staying the same is a bad thing.
