Surrender Chapter 15 Summary

Gabriel

  • In bed, Gabriel thinks about the fact that he hasn't seen Finnigan in over a year, yet it's gone by quickly.
  • He knew his dark friend would return again one day.
  • Gabriel remembers how he and Evangeline walked along Rabbit Road, talking about everything—colors, life, the world—you name it.
  • Later, Finnigan pesters him about his new friend. He knows Gabriel wants to be more than friends with Evangeline, but doesn't have the guts to say it.
  • Gabriel brushes this aside: "You're being ridiculous," he tells Finnigan, getting annoyed.
  • But deep down, he admits the truth. He's imagined what it would be like to get to second base with her, but he's too scared to come clean. Gabriel's worried she won't feel the same way, and then they couldn't even be friends.
  • Finnigan tells him that he can't change the rules of the pact—he will always do bad stuff in Gabriel's life. It's fate.
  • Gabriel also fills us in on the fact that he's sixteen now. He wishes he could go back to that time and beat Finnigan up, but it's too late.
  • He's sure not to let his parents in on his little secret, though. He doesn't want them to have any clue about Evangeline, so every time he hangs out with her, he tells them he's walking Surrender.
  • The only problem? Sometimes Surrender is off with Finnigan, which makes it hard to use the dog as a cover.
  • Gabriel warns Finnigan that he needs to make sure Surrender doesn't follow him again, but Finnigan protests that Surrender comes with him all on his own—he just loves roaming the forest.
  • To boot, Finnigan points out that he doesn't even know Evangeline that well. And why doesn't she introduce Gabriel to her friends? He bets she's embarrassed to hang around Gabriel.
  • Why else would she keep their friendship a secret? Finnigan's words cut Gabriel to the core, and he's not sure if it's because they're true, or because he doesn't want them to be.
  • They fight more about Evangeline, and finally Finnigan announces he doesn't share.
  • What's that supposed to mean? Finnigan's sure Gabriel can figure it out, but he'll tell his buddy one thing: He's not going anywhere.
  • Cue the creepy music.
