Surrender Chapter 17 Summary

Gabriel

  • Finnigan looks the same as he always does, Gabriel thinks. He's still the same manipulative guy he always was.
  • He takes off his coat and tells Gabriel that he doesn't look good. (Gee, thanks.)
  • They mention the bones, and Finnigan says that's why he's there.
  • Finnigan asks if Gabriel wants him to get Surrender, and he responds, "he's your dog."
  • Then he thinks about how Surrender has always been freer than Gabriel—it's why he was such a great fit with Finnigan.
  • He used to run around stealing chickens, and foxes would get blamed; Gabriel told him to be careful.
  • One day, a neighbor named Dockie May comes by the house with a gun, claiming that Surrender grabbed—and killed—five of his goats.
  • He took a shot at him and got him in the shoulder, and he's here now to finish him off.
  • Gabriel questions why Dockie thinks it was his dog who did this, and Dockie agrees to take it easy on Surrender until they figure that out. But he guesses it won't be all that hard, considering he stuck a bullet in the culprit's shoulder.
  • Gabriel's dad hears the commotion and assures Dockie that they'll finish Surrender off if he's shot. Besides, a shot dog is as good as dead anyway.
  • After Dockie leaves, they look for Surrender, and find him, complete with a bullet in his shoulder.
  • Gabriel is disappointed, but he knows there's no point in arguing with his dad when he's instructed to tie Surrender up and borrow Dockie's gun later that day.
  • At night, Gabriel unties Surrender and takes him into the forest. He knows his dog is guilty, but he doesn't want him to die either.
  • He calls out for Finnigan and explains what's happened, before giving his dog to his friend. He knows he can't go home with him, because his dad will finish him off.
