Things Not Seen Chapter 28 Summary

Looking Again

  • The next day, Bobby hangs out at home and stares at himself in the mirror; his parents also spend a lot of time looking at him.
  • He calls Sheila and lets her know that he's back, and that all she needs to do is sleep under the blanket again.
  • She tells him that she's glad he called, but that she was on a bad track before she disappeared, and she's kind of happy being invisible; she doesn't want to have to worry about how she looks, or who she's going to be with.
  • His parents haven't talked to Alicia's family, so he goes to her house to tell her the good news. When he shows up at the door, her mom is shocked and so happy for him.
  • He tells Alicia everything: the social worker's visit, his call to Sheila, and how he wanted to come tell her in person.
  • And then something weird happens… Alicia starts to cry. For some reason, she gets all mad and sarcastic at him, and then runs upstairs and slams the door. Alicia's mom tells him not to take it personally—Alicia gets mad at every little thing.
  • He tries to contact her via instant messenger, but she doesn't respond, so Bobby grabs his electric blanket and wraps it up in a box. Then he goes to the post office and mails it to Sheila… just in case she changes her mind.
  • When he gets home, there is an email from Alicia waiting for him. In it, she admits that she was upset because she felt like Bobby wouldn't need her anymore, and that he's just going to go back to his regular life and forget about her.
  • She was also afraid of him kissing her, because it wouldn't be just a simple kiss with him, it would be something more serious. She ends it with a poem that she wrote for him.
  • Bobby gets all sentimental reading the poem, and he starts crying tears of happiness as he does so. Then he folds up the letter and sticks it in his pocket. He needs to go talk to Alicia in person.
  • He needs to tell her that he loves her poem—heck, that he loves her.
