Famous Athletes
What on earth is in the water at Stanford? Three of the very top players in the world all went there and won NCAA championships for the Cardinal:
Maggie Steffens. Steffens is an Olympic Gold medalist, an NCAA National Champion, and was named as FINA's female water polo player of the year in 2012. Oh, and she accomplished all of these things before her twenty-first birthday. We're sure they had sparkling cider on hand to celebrate.
Tony Azevedo. On his way to a pair of NCAA National Championships, Azevedo racked up a ridiculous four Peter J. Cutino Awards for most outstanding college water polo player. That's one for every year of his collegiate career. Now, he's the captain of the U.S. Men's National team. Go figure.
Brenda Villa. FINA named her Female Water Polo Player of the Decade from 2000 to 2009, and for good reason; she's the most decorated athlete in the history of the sport. The Stanford grad is a four-time Olympic medalist with the U.S. National Team, including a gold medal in 2012. She's also won a crazy sixteen additional medals from major international tournaments.
Dezső Gyarmati. The Hungarian national is widely regarded to be the best player in the history of the game. He led his country to five Olympic medals from 1948 to 1964, three of which were gold. Most notable among these was Hungary's victory against the Soviet Union in 1956, nicknamed the "Blood in the Water" match because it was set against the backdrop of political tension between the two countries.
