Young Adult Literature; Historical Fiction
This story is told by a twelve year old, and details his adventures with kids his age and his teenage sister. Because of this, the language is straightforward and the subject matter generally goes down like a spoonful of sugar for young adult readers. If you're looking for Al Capone Does My Shirts, we highly suggest checking out the YA section of your library's shelves first.
If you come up empty handed in the YA section, though, swing by the historical fiction area. After all, this book takes place during the Great Depression on Alcatraz Island, home to one of the most famous prisons in American history. Alcatraz has been shuttered for decades at this point, though, and the Great Depression is something your grandma probably knows way more about than you, so while Al Capone Does My Shirts is first and foremost YA lit, it will feel right at home tucked amongst other historical fiction books, too.
