Al Capone Does My Shirts Part 1, Chapter 19 Summary

Daddy's Little Miss

  • The next day, Scout ignores Moose; Moose eats in the library by himself to avoid everyone at lunch.
  • When he gets home, Theresa knocks on the door. Piper is giving out the money, and even though he doesn't get any, Annie's offered to buy candy.
  • Natalie gets her buttons and they go to join the rest.
  • Piper calls to Natalie to help her count the money. Natalie rattles out the correct amount, very pleased with herself.
  • As Natalie is dividing the money, Mr. Trixle appears with news: The warden needs to see Annie, Moose, Piper and Jimmy in his office—pronto.
  • Busted.
  • Theresa insists on coming, even though she wasn't among the count.
  • Once they're in his office, the warden reads a letter. It's from one of the parents at the school and it's about the laundry service.
  • The warden questions Annie first, who says that they were all following Piper. Wrong thing to say. The warden starts lecturing about wrong it is to blame other people for your own mistakes.
  • He tells them that they'll end up like the criminals on the island if they keep it up.
  • When he finds out that money is involved, he gets even angrier, and insists the money be returned to the students immediately.
  • Once the conversation turns to Moose, he tries to tell the warden that he wasn't involved. The warden is furious that he's making excuses.
  • He tells all the kids that if something like this happens again, their parents will lose their jobs.
  • The warden then guilt trips Moose, using Natalie, which is super uncool.
  • As the kids file out of his room, they see Piper whispering into her dad's ear. Life's no fair, and she's totally going to get out of this one.
