- There's Bartholomew, burdened with the very adult role of putting the King to bed. There's Bartholomew, pacing nervously at the window like a character on Mad Men.
- We see his powerlessness, too, when Seuss reminds us of the boy's low position in the power structure: "There was no sleep for Bartholomew, the page boy." He knows something terrible is about to happen, but he is who he is, and who he is can't do much.
