- Now that Merlin is on the Breton shore, he figures he'd better find Ambrosius himself. If he really can offer important intel about Wales, Ambrosius might hire him.
- Merlin follows a heavily guarded wagon, since he figures it must have important cargo and therefore will wind up near Ambrosius.
- Along the road, Merlin notices a ton of gigantic stones. These are not random boulders—clearly, they have significance. And Merlin feels that they are somehow powerful.
- Merlin sees that one of the stones has a two-headed ax carved into it. But when he tries to look at it a second time, the ax figure disappears. That's not creepy at all.
- Merlin follows the wagon to a walled town but realizes that he won't be able to get in. Which is really too bad, since he's freezing to death in his burlap sack outfit.
- In his desperation, Merlin finds a house with a stable outside the walls of the town. He shoves in with the bulls in the shed. Because why not?
- But Merlin soon gets a visitor. A young jerk of a soldier shoves his horse into the crowded shed and leaves his good wool cloak and a saddlebag full of food as well. You can see where this is going.
- Merlin overhears the young soldier making plans to visit the house through the back door so that the father won't see him. Naughty behavior is afoot.
