- That dense paragraph? It comes from the Declaration of Independence.
- When in doubt, quote it out.
- Marcus and Charles argue some more. Ms. Galvez gives out an extra credit assignment—compare "the antiwar and civil rights movements in the Bay Area to the present day civil rights responses to the War on Terror"—as a way to get everyone to settle down (11.14).
- Class over, Marcus tells Ms. Galvez it was an amazing time. She's proud of him for referencing the Declaration.
- Marcus, not clued into the fact that the party in Dolores Park is illegal, realizes it has no permit.
- Saturday comes. People are wandering around, including undercover cops. You can tell the undercovers by their haircuts and physique.
- Marcus and Ange meet at the anarchist bookstore. He's totally not trying too hard to impress her.
- Okay, he totally is.
- Time for a Mission burrito. Marcus and Ange talk about the upcoming concert as they go get food.
- When she gets her burrito, Ange sprays the inside with capsaicin oil that she carries with her. She's a spicy food addict. Marcus tries a bite to and feels like his mouth is on fire. Turns out that pure capsaicin is fifteen million on the Scoville scale.
- Food eaten, Marcus and Ange head to Dolores Park. There are hundreds more people there than when Marcus walked by earlier.
- It's not totally clear then or later how many people were there; organizers say 20,000, the cops say 5,000. So, maybe 12,500?
- The bands are set up inside tennis courts. Marcus explains that later he finds a photo stream of everyone smuggling in the speakers and other equipment throughout the day.
- The speakers are powered by car batteries. Marcus thinks people organized all the details on Xnet.
- The concert has a mix of bands. When Trudy Doo takes the stage with the Speedwhores, she yells at the crowd not to trust her because she's thirty-two. There's some major crowd call and response happening. People dance and shout, "take it back" (12.107).
- Tired from all the dancing, Marcus and Ange go to the edge of the crowd and start kissing. It's unlike any kissing Marcus has ever experienced. They make out for a while in the grass.
- Then they move over across the street and things get a bit more steamy.
- The police show up.
- Sirens really kill the mood, you know? There's a voice yelling for everyone to disperse, helicopters, police in riot gear, and a crowd of angry people growling "Take it back" in response.
- Pepper spray drops from the choppers. Coughing and screaming ensue.
- Ange and Marcus pretend they weren't at the concert and walk down the street holding hands, acting like they're just trying to get away. Marcus puts Ange in a cab home, she kisses him, and he heads home himself.
- Marcus feels ashamed for leaving the concert.
- Monday morning, Fred Benson is behind Ms. Galvez's desk. She's no longer their teacher.
- Charles looks pleased. Marcus asks why. They start a unit on national security.
- On the bus after school, two guys in suits are reading an article on the "youth riot" in Dolores Park. They chuckle and ask if the kids are brainwashed. Marcus is upset.
