- Aphrodite is catty when Zoey shows up for the Dark Daughters ritual, but that's no surprise.
- Aphrodite starts the ritual by saying that two fledglings have passed, and she doesn't feel badly about it because they were weak. Then she says it's Samhain, a time of celebration, so they're going to get out of school and go to an awesome new place, where there's a refrigerator waiting.
- At least Erik is there, and he and Zoey walk together. They slip out of a trap door and out into public. Apparently the Dark Daughters and Sons sneak out from time to time, and the faculty turns a blind eye so long as they don't do anything stupid.
- The fledglings end up at the Philbrook Museum, in the garden where there's a fountain, gazebo, and other nice landscaping; their group forms a loose circle around the gazebo.
- Aphrodite and her groupies stand inside the gazebo, where they've set up a table with candles. Whoever's acting as the refrigerator is hooded and slumped on the table.
- Aphrodite begins the ritual by calling the spirits of their ancestors. Zoey notices that she's burning sweet grass, which according to Grandma, should only be used if sage has already been burned to purify the area since sweet grass on its own can attract bad mojo.
- As the ritual continues, Aphrodite calls upon mystical and magical ancestors to manifest. The outlines of people begin to form in the smoke—they look like ghosts.
- Suddenly Heath interrupts the ritual.
