Pedro Páramo Timeline and Summary

  • Pedro grows up in Comala, raised by his mother and grandmother. He misses his friend, Susana, who moved away with her father.
  • When he grows up and his father, Lucas, dies, Pedro takes over his family's ranch, the Media Luna. He goes about expanding it by stealing from his neighbors and tricking people to get out of paying his debts.
  • Pedro marries Dolores Preciado because he owes her family money. He gets her pregnant, but is always yelling at her and she complains about missing her sister. One day he sends her to go live with her sister because he's sick of her whining. She has a son named Juan Preciado, the narrator, whom Pedro never meets.
  • Pedro has several children, but one of their mothers dies in childbirth and the priest, Father Rentería, brings him to live with Pedro. The boy's name is Miguel, and he's a real wild child.
  • Pedro sends someone to go search for Susana and her father. He convinces them to come back to Comala by giving her father a ranch, but then has him killed so Susana will stay with him. He loves her and watches her every night even though she is crazy and he can't make her happy.
  • When Susana dies and the town has a festival for several days, Pedro becomes so upset and angry that he decides to crush Comala. He lets the ranch go, and everyone starves to death because of his rage.
  • One day he is sitting on the front porch, an old man, thinking about Susana. Abundio, the mule driver who was also one of Pedro's illegitimate children, comes up to him, drunk, asking for money to pay for his wife's funeral. He stabs Pedro and kills him.
