- Back at the academy, the ball is in just a few weeks and Tutor Olana is tense. She wants to make sure that all the girls are perfect to show to the prince.
- Miri is also working hard to study in order to beat Katar. She wants to be academy princess, even if she's not sure whether or not she wants to be the actual princess.
- Finally it's time for the final exam, which will decide whether or not the girls get to attend the ball and meet the prince.
- After individual tests, the girls go outside with Tutor Olana for an oral exam; they use quarry-speech to help each other because all the girls want to go to the ball.
- When it gets to Katar's turn, she almost misses her question… and even though Miri doesn't like her, she goes ahead and sends her the answer in quarry-speech for the sake of fairness.
- The girls have a hard time eating dinner as they wait for their scores to be announced.
- Tutor Olana comes in and says that the five top scores—Katar, Miri, Esa, Liana, and Bena—are too close to tell. Therefore, it will be up to the rest of the class to choose the academy princess.
- And so it is official: Miri is chosen as academy princess. She's elated by the choice.
- When she goes outside to get away from everything though, she finds Katar sitting alone and crying.
- Katar tells her to go ahead and gloat, but Miri tries to comfort her.
- As she cries, Katar says that she just wanted a chance to leave Mount Eskel because she hates it here. Her mother is dead and her father doesn't even pay attention to her, unlike Miri's father who loves his daughters.
- Miri reaches out and tells Katar that she's sorry, hoping that she'll somehow be able to make things better.
