- Miri wakes up with a jolt feeling as though someone has called her, even though it's completely silent. She looks around and sees that the other girls and the bandits are all asleep.
- Then she realizes that quarry-speech woke her up—Peder heard her call for help. Yay. When she presses against the floor, she's greeted with the memory of a mountain cat hunt that the villagers went on. Peder is trying to tell her that the villagers are outside and they've come to help.
- Miri looks outside and sees a line of darker shapes—the villagers are definitely there and need the girls to rush out so that they can fight the bandits.
- She wakes up all the girls quietly and points toward the window. The bandits are sleeping against the door, so they'll have to escape through the window and make a run for their families.
- The girls tear off the wood around the window and silently crawl out one by one; as they're going out, the bandits start to wake up from the cold air.
- Miri is the last one out and she sprints toward the villagers with the bandits hot on her heels.
- A hand suddenly yanks her back and she turns around to see that Dan has grabbed her—he says that he'll see her broken and dead.
