Dough Boy and Charlie T (Harry Northup and Norman Matlock)

Character Analysis

Dough Boy and Charlie T are two other cabbies who hang out with Wizard and Travis at a diner. Dough Boy seems into lots of schemes—he tries to get Travis Bickle to help him sell a piece of the movie star Errol Flynn's bath tub (Travis refuses). He also urges Travis to buy a gun for personal protection (advice Travis does take—though for more than just personal protection).

On the other hand, Charlie T doesn't say that much—he's a black cab driver, and he doesn't seem to have any racial tension with the other, white cabbies, even though Wizard refers to the predominantly black district of Harlem as "f***in' Mau Mau Land" when he's around. (The Mau Maus were Kenyan rebels who killed white British settlers). At one point, Charlie T calls Travis "killer," which proves prophetic, since Travis really does become a killer.
