How It All Goes Down
- During the summer, Jeannette wants to cool off at the city pool, but Ernie Goad is always there taunting her.
- So Dinitia offers to take Jeanette to the pool in the mornings, when all the black people swim. She says no one will care that a white girl is in the pool with them.
- And, in fact, no one cares. Everyone is nice to Jeannette—even the naked women in the changing room.
- Jeannette enjoys her morning swim and says she "never felt cleaner" (3.15.20).
