The Golem and the Jinni Chapter 10 Summary

How It All Goes Down

  • Back in Konin, Yehudah Schaalman is still obsessed with Rotfeld, but what he really wants is "the secret of unending life" (10.5).
  • He used to search for it tirelessly, but started to give up as he grew old.
  • Then he has a vision of Rotfeld at the bottom of the sea: He never made it to America.
  • Schaalman decides to go to New York himself.
  • In New York, Michael Levy, the Rabbi's nephew, arrives at the Sheltering House and finds that he has a present: macaroons from the new girl at the bakery. Yum yum.
  • Although the Golem is doing well at the bakery, the Radzins and Anna gossip about her because she's so different.
  • Still, she's a great worker, so they give her a raise, even though the Golem doesn't think it's fair to make more money than Anna does.
  • The Rabbi visits the Golem at her boardinghouse and tries to convince her to spend her money, even though she doesn't really need anything.
  • The Golem tells the Rabbi about Anna, and how she worries that Anna might become pregnant.
  • The Rabbi walks home, wondering if the Golem has a soul.
  • He's decided not to destroy her, but instead to try to bind her to a new master.
