Although What I Saw and How I Lied isn't a technically difficult book to read—the language is simple and straightforward—it does involve complicated and adult themes. The book is a coming of age story about Evie, and as such, it taps into all of the unpleasantness that comes with adolescence: unrequited love, sexual awakenings, and the realization that your heroes can actually be very flawed human beings.
