What’s Up With the Ending?

The ending of What I Saw and How I Lied takes place in the same place that the novel opens up in—New York City. Even though most of the book takes place in Palm Beach, we're brought back home with Evie and her family to show that things have come full circle. Just like Joe and Bev promised, things are back to normal… kind of.

But even if everything is the same on the outside, Evie has undergone a personal transformation. She goes to the Graysons' apartment because her view of the world is different now; she knows that what Joe did was wrong and she wants to return the money to people who deserve it. She doesn't want to just end up like her parents:

But while I'd be their daughter, while I'd eat the roast and come home from dates and wash the dishes, I would also be myself. I would love my mother, but I would never want to be her again. I would never be what someone else wanted me to be. (35.103)

It may seem like Evie just ended up where she started, but she's actually come a long way. By having the book end in the same place it begins, then, we can't help but notice just how different our main girl is.
