Evie and her mother always say that they stick together like glue in What I Saw and How I Lied, which clues us in to just how important family is to this story. After all, even though Joe isn't Evie's real dad, they're a tight-knit group—nobody's coming between them, not even Grandma Glad. It's due to this very closeness, though, that Evie does a solid (a really big solid) for Joe and her mom at the end when she lies in court to get them off of murder charges. She may not respect or look up to her parents anymore, but she's not going to let the law tear her family apart.
