How It All Goes Down

Birthday

  • Sunday, May 24, 1992 (Clare is 21, Henry is 28): Clare and Henry hang out at his apartment. Henry is trying to seduce her when Clare stops him to ask if he thinks other people have as much sex as they do: "How much sex is enough?" (1.10.24). Henry says that most people don't and that she's just about the most sexual woman he's ever met. As for him, the perfect life would be to stay in bed all the time. Clare tells him that when she was sixteen, she tried to seduce him, but he acted as the better man and told her they should wait. Henry tells Clare that having sex with her makes him feel connected to her. It holds him in the present. He tells Clare that he loves her and proposes to her. She says yes.
  • Sunday, May 31, 1992 (Clare is 21, Henry is 28): Henry brings Clare to meet his father at a dinner at Mrs. Kim's house. Henry's father takes to Clare: "Henry has chosen well" (1.10.110). He still doesn't understand why on earth Clare would want to marry his son, though. Clare jokes that it's because Henry is "really good in bed" (1.10.111).
  • Wednesday, June 1992 (Clare is 21): While Henry's off somewhere time traveling, Clare meets Celia by chance. When she tells her she's engaged to Henry, Celia says she's either brave or crazy. Celia convinces Clare to come to a bar to meet Ingrid. When Ingrid finds out Clare is engaged to Henry, she accuses Celia of bringing Clare around to rub in the news. Clare leaves, disturbed.
