Character Analysis
The warden is the boss on Alcatraz Island, and whatever he says goes. Even his wily daughter, Piper, occasionally comes under his rule-enforcement.
As most powerful men do, the warden comes off as super intimidating. When he meets with Moose at the beginning of the story, "he sounds annoyed, like I've flunked his first test [and] his sharp eyes seem to poke into me" (6.12). Remember: They're only meeting because the warden (at Piper's insistence) has invited Moose to come. So maybe simmer down a bit on the disappointment, dude.
His toughness aside, the warden is also capable of being super unfair, patriculary in matters concerning Piper. So when he gets wind of Piper's laundry scheme, instead of holding her accountable, he reams out every one of her friends instead, despite their minimized (or in the case of Moose, non-existent) involvement. When the kids try to defend themselves, he says:
"The one thing I've never had patience for is a person who blames someone else to lessen her own culpability." (19.42)
Oh wait… you mean like your daughter? Ugh. This totally makes our blood boil.
