- Gemma wakes up totally freaked out, even though she's had this nightmare every single night recently.
- This recurring bad dream isn't not the only thing bothering her, either: She's been going through a weird phase (even for a teenager). See, she used to not feel any emotions, but in the past month something's changed and Gemma can actually feel, well, feelings.
- She's been crying and getting angry and feeling afraid all over the place—it's totally weird and she hasn't been able to talk to anyone about it.
- Her alarm goes off and Gemma gets dressed before going downstairs. Her grandparents, Marco and Sophia, are already there eating breakfast. They give her a very lukewarm hello.
- She's lived with them since her parents died in a car accident when she was one, but they've never shown her a lot of love. And since emotions started kicking in, they've avoided her even more.
- They also refuse to talk about her parents, which seems super odd. Understandably, Gemma is totally planning to move far, far away after she graduates from high school in a few months. She hates living in this small town of Afton with her emotionally unavailable grandparents.
- She drives to school and parks in the parking lot. As she's getting out of her car, she sees a new guy walking into the school and her heart does a weird fluttery thing. That's never happened before…
- As she walks into the school, they approach the door at the same time, and when she looks him in the eye, Gemma feels a shock of electricity. She gasps.
- The dude seems to feel something, too, but instead of looking surprised, he just looks at her with pure hatred. Um… what's up with that?
