Character Analysis
Anastasia
This vampyre is also a teacher at the House of Night. According to Stevie Rae, "She teaches the Spells and Rituals class. She's also Dragon's wife" (15.34). So it seems fitting that she's the one greeting participants outside the full moon ritual, tracing a pentagram on their foreheads while giving a ritual blessing.
She's beautiful, too (surprise, surprise): "Her hair was long and the color of wheat. Sapphire-colored spirals radiated from her crescent moon tattoo to down around her flawless face" (15.33). And Anastasia is also kind. When she greets Zoey, she tells her: "There's no need to be nervous, I believe the Goddess is already looking after you" (15.41). We bet she's a good teacher.
Dustin and Drew
These two brothers are friends with Heath and presumably also on the football team. When Zoey seems them afterschool on the day when she's Marked, she observes them "doing what they were usually doing—wrestling around and arguing over God only knows what stupid boy thing" (2.4).
While they ignore Zoey at first, as soon as Heath points out that she's Marked, they react by saying stuff like, "Well, s***. Zoey's a f***ing freak!" (2.25). They drive their truck out of the parking lot, picking up Heath on their way, telling Zoey to "Leave him alone, you freak!" (2.42). So while we give these brothers props for looking out for Heath, it seems like they're also pretty narrow-minded.
Kathy Richter
Zoey describes this gal as "the biggest ho in school" (1.53), and she watches as this girl flirts with Heath, though Zoey doesn't do anything about it because of the Mark that's now on her forehead. This goes to show that Zoey cares what other people think about her—even when she doesn't respect those people. For more on this—and Zoey's thoughts on female sexuality—be sure to read her analysis elsewhere in this section.
Loren Blake
This guy is the Vamp Poet Laureate, according to Stevie Rae. He helps preside over the first full moon ritual that Zoey attends, and when she sees him, she thinks, "here was an excellent example of the stereotype of the gorgeous vamp guy, up close and personal. He was over six feet tall and looked like he belonged on the big screen" (15.48). Swoon.
We also find out that he teaches at the House of Night, since Shaunee refers to him as "the only reason I'm taking that damn Poetry elective" (15.49). Hey, whatever it takes to get kids to like poetry is fine by us.
Random Dork
When Zoey's Marked, the only witnesses are Kayla and "a tall thin dork with messed-up teeth" (1.35). It doesn't seem like he'd meant to be there, either, since Zoey notices "he was standing there with his mouth flapping out staring at me like I'd just given birth to a litter of flying pigs" (1.35)—and as soon as Zoey starts to make disgusting coughing sounds, he flees the scene.
While we never learn this kid's name or what happens to him, his reaction gives us a good sense of how somewhat people view vampyres: as utterly freaky. Good to know.
The Vampyre Tracker
We never learn this dude's name, but he's the one who shows up in the first few pages of the book to Mark Zoey and call her to the House of Night. Here's what Zoey observes about him:
There was no mistaking what he was and even if I hadn't felt the power and darkness that radiated from him, there was no frickin' way I could miss his Mark, the sapphire-blue crescent moon on his forehead and the additional tattooing of entwining knot work that framed his equally blue eyes. (1.18)
Okay, so he's pretty distinctive-looking, we get it. And when he tells Zoey that she's summoned to the House of Night to meet her destiny, it has a creepy effect: "his ceremonial words slicked across the space between us, dangerous and seductive, like blood mixed with melted chocolate" (1.21). And then this happens: "He lifted one, long white finger and pointed at me. As my forehead exploded in pain Kayla opened her mouth and screamed" (1.23). Yikes. This vampyre Tracker is apparently a pretty powerful dude, even though we never see him after this.
