- Jump back to the original narrator and his conversation with Eduviges (the one who we just found out killed herself years before…).
- The narrator is left to sleep on the floor, but is awakened by loud cries: Someone is complaining about being hanged.
- Just then the door opens, but instead of Eduviges a different woman, this one named Damiana Cisneros, appears. She invites the narrator to come sleep at her house.
- He remembers that she is one of the people who lived at the Media Luna, Pedro Páramo's ranch, and she says that she's known the narrator since the day he was born.
- He asks her about the murder and yelling he just heard, and she says it must be a trapped echo, since a long time ago a man named Toribio Aldrete had been hanged in the room where he's supposed to be sleeping.
- Whoever did it to him had left him there to dry out, so that he wouldn't get a burial and therefore rest in peace.
- When the narrator tells Damiana that Eduviges is the one who let him into the room, Damiana is surprised to hear that she's still wandering "like a lost soul."
