- A new character shows up in this section, Father Rentería, who is supposed to bless Miguel Páramo's body so it can go to heaven. He, however, doesn't feel like it.
- Pedro, Miguel's father, comes to talk to Father Rentería, and we find out through their conversation that Miguel was pretty much a horrible person.
- There are rumors that not only did he kill the priest's brother, but he also raped his niece, Ana. So that explains the priest's reluctance to bless the body of this evil man. Yeah, we'd kind of want to throw it off a cliff.
- Anyway, Pedro gives the priest some gold coins and leaves to go bury his son.
- Father Rentería picks up the money and then prays, saying that Miguel was rich enough to buy his way into heaven, but that he hopes that God sends him to hell anyway.
- After this emotional scene, the priest collapses into tears and loses his battle with God, saying "All right, Lord. You win." What do you think he means with this surrender?
