- Susana wakes up in the rainy night, and feels a heaviness over her. She asks if it is Bartolomé, and then hears the door squeak like someone is coming in or leaving.
- Susana calls for Justina and tells her that the cat is in again. Justina starts crying because she has to tell Susana that her father, Bartolomé, is dead.
- They conclude that it was his ghost that was saying goodbye to Susana, not the cat, like she thought.
- Susana remembers a time when she was a little girl: Her father had tied a rope around her and lowered her down into the abandoned mine.
- He made her pick up a human skull that she found at the bottom to look for gold coins. She fainted and didn't remember anything for days.
- Wow, dude. We thought that this might be a cute story like, "One day her dad took her to get ice cream" or "One time her dad took her fishing." Ugh. Not in this novel.
- She hated her father for doing that to her, and that's why she laughs when she finds out he's dead, while Justina cries.
- The rain continues outside, and Comala is being flooded.
