- We're back with the original narrator, who walks through town with Damiana Cisneros. She's telling him that the town is full of echoes, like there are people even though it is empty.
- She tells him that sometimes she hears voices and recognizes the people who are talking. That once a woman came up begging her to pray for her, and she realized it was her own sister, who had been dead for many, many years.
- She also calls the narrator by his name for the first time, Juan Preciado.
- He asks her whether she is alive, but she disappears without answering and Juan finds himself alone again in the streets of Comala. He just doesn't have any luck with all these dead women.
