- Justina tells Pedro Páramo that his wife is dying, and they talk about whether the priest has been up to give her her last rites.
- She hasn't confessed, so she is not in a state of grace and will not go straight to heaven if she dies before the priest comes.
- Susana is naked and begins to have a seizure, and Pedro goes to cover her. The priest shows up and tells Susana that he is there to give her Communion.
- She thinks that the priest is her dead first husband, Florencio, and falls back to sleep.
