Perfect Chapter 17 Summary

Cara

  • Cara's still having her existential crisis: She wants to try new things, but she's afraid she'll fail.
  • Welcome to being human, Cara!
  • She wakes up from a dream about trying to crawl out of quicksand and, since it's a beautiful day, she goes out for a jog.
  • While running, she contemplates Sean, Conner, and Dani, who has asked her to go snowboarding again.
  • After finishing a few miles, she jogs home past Mrs. Sanders's house. Movers are packing stuff into a truck, and there's a For Sale sign in the yard.
  • Cara knows her mom is the one who ran Mrs. Sanders not just out of her job, but out of town. (Not that it's okay to have an affair with your student, or anything, but Cara thinks Conner is the one who started the whole thing.)
  • Back at home, her parents are having coffee, and Cara bursts through the door and asks them what they've done.
  • Mrs. Sykes, always worried about her flooring, tells Cara she's dripping sweat on the tile; she also tells Cara they got a restraining order against Mrs. Sanders.
  • Additionally, she somehow pushed Mrs. Sanders into getting a divorce. Moral of the story? Never underestimate the power of Cara's mom.
  • Cara feels angry and dirty, so she takes a shower. Then she calls Dani, because she needs to get out of the house.
  • They meet and go for a walk. Cara tells Dani the whole story about her family and Conner's affair with Mrs. Sanders.
  • Dani tells Cara about her family. Her mom was a prostitute who overdosed on heroin, and in response, her fourteen-year-old brother, Caleb, ate a bunch of Ecstasy, stole a car, and drove head-on into a semi.
  • You win, Dani.
  • They kiss again. It's hot again. Cara's officially in love with a girl.
