Perfect Chapter 5 Summary

Cara

  • Cara wants to go for a run, but it wouldn't be a snow day if the roads weren't icy.
  • She tells us how she will "forever walk beneath an umbrella of expectation," and how her parents won't accept anything other than their plans for her life.
  • Her friends pretend to love her, but they're just hanging out with her in the hope that her popularity rubs off on them.
  • Sean says he loves her, too, but she's not even sure what love is, so how can she know if he's telling the truth?
  • Speaking of Sean, she's totally not attracted to him. He's fun and adventurous, though, and it's nice always having someone to hang out with.
  • Sean comes to her house in his GMC pickup (a gift from Uncle Jeff) to pick her up—they're going to the cemetery to visit his dad's grave. His dad died in a bus crash; his mom died giving birth to his brother at home.
  • The cab of the truck is filled with flowers. Cara notices there are no roses and wonders why, so Sean explains his mom loved roses and grew them everywhere, and when she died, his dad went nuts and ripped them all out.
  • They go to the grave and Sean places the flowers on his parents' headstones. Cara notices that Sean's mom was only twenty-eight.
  • Sean goes off on how she wouldn't have died if she hadn't gotten all hippie and new-agey, tried to give birth at home, and hemorrhaged
  • Cara sort of understands. She doesn't really have much of a mom either.
