How It All Goes Down
- Dolores shows up at Merton College, and it's nothing like the brochure made it out to be.
- It's deserted, for one thing.
- Turns out she's a week early, but Dottie, the fat grouchy maintenance woman (and Dolores is an authority on fat and grouchy at this point) lets her go ahead and move in.
- Dolores hangs up her mom's flying leg painting and falls asleep.
- Dottie knocks on the door and tells Dolores she'll bring her some cream cake at eight in the morning—she also takes the opportunity to remind her, "I'm doing you a big favor" (2.12.79).
- She shows up with breakfast and decides that she and Dolores have a lot in common. They're "a clean fat" (2.12.93).
- Dottie gets close to Dolores really fast. She says she should come over to her apartment someday to see her fish (piranha, angelfish, and so on) and starts feeding her cream cake and wiping frosting off her chin.
