Pretty much any story set in a small town is going to be about freedom and confinement. Add into that mix teenagers and werewolves, and the desire to escape is so strong we're surprised Mercy Falls doesn't go nuclear.
This being Shiver, there's a lot of gray area, though. And not just the bleak weather and the color of the wolves' furry coats. With confinement comes comfort and safety. Freedom might be free and exciting, but it's also dangerous and difficult. Shiver might just be about trying to find the perfect balance between the two.
