Young Adult Literature; Folklore, Legend, and Mythology
Mostly we're going to say that Everneath is YA. Here's why:
- Teenage girl protagonist
- Reliable boyfriend figure versus sexy dangerous new guy
- High school setting
See? The book has more in common with Twilight than with Animal Farm, if you know what we mean. It's totally about teens and for teens.
But we're also giving a shout-out to folklore, legend, and mythology as well because Everneath is based on various underworld myths, such as Persephone and Hades, Orpheus and Eurydice, and Isis and Osiris. In other words, no myths, no plot with this book. Everneath takes elements from these classic mythological stories, puts 'em in a blender, and swirls them into the modern day.
