There is some freaky stuff going on in Everneath: a group of immortals called the Everlivings who feed on emotions; the mysterious Shades that patrol the Tunnels and help with the feeding; and the human sacrifices known as Forfeits who, if they return to the Surface, have some bizarre empathic powers of their own.
Blurring the lines between religion, myth, and history, the way the Everlivings work is definitely outside the realm of the natural or scientific. Nikki barely has a grasp on it herself, and she's in a position where she needs to understand how these forces have changed her life. She also needs to explain it to others, like when she decides to come clean to Jack about what really happened to her. It ain't easy, but it's a key part of Nikki's journey after her Return. Plus, Cole just won't leave her alone.

Chew on This
If Nikki knew more about how the Everneath worked, she would be able to solve more of her problems.
The Everneath works according to its own system of natural laws, so it's not actually a magical place.
