fight and flight
- In Titus's upcar, on the way to Violet's house, the pair fights. Violet feels insulted that his friends just dissed her, while Tituspoints out that Violet sometimes acts a bit uppity—like she thinks she's better and smarter than the rest of them (well, she pretty much is).
- And then Violet drops the bombshell on him: there'ssomething really wrong with her feed, from the hacker incident. She's been to lots of doctors and technicians, and they haven't figured out what the problem is yet.
- See, she got her feed installed a lot later than most kids do. Most kids (all the cool kids, apparently) get the feed when they're babies, but Violet's family was too poor.
- Getting the feed late is a problem because it's wired intoeverything: people's ability to control their body, their emotions, and their memory. In short, she's getting ready to malfunction big time.
- Out of the blue, Violet asks Titus to drop them in the upcar—because she just wants to feel something.
- It makes them both feel a bit sick, but right afterwardsthey make up.
- Violet tells Titus they can go back to the party, but he declines. So, they go to his house instead.
