- En route to Monsea, Katsa worries about how Leck's Grace, if he indeed has one, will affect her. Po's Grace will protect him from having his mind messed with, and he says he will protect Katsa, but Katsa isn't used to relying on other people for her own safety.
- As they travel, the weather—rainy and cold—becomes challenging. But Katsa builds a fire, Po catches a rabbit, and they settle down feeling pretty snug. Except that:
- Katsa wakes in the middle of the night worrying about Po, wondering what she would do if something happened to him, and realizing how attached to him she has become… all of which puts her in an extremely grumpy mood the next morning.
- After a day of relative silence, she tells Po, "I don't want this," to which he replies, "I hadn't planned for it either" (19.34-34). Still, there it is: they've fallen in love.
- Po assures Katsa he'd never ask her to change if they married, but Katsa says it doesn't matter—getting married would change her nonetheless. So Po suggests an alternative: they can be lovers without getting married.
- Hm. Katsa will have to think on that one.
