Quote #7
Stevie Rae would find out someday how blood affected me, but it wouldn't be tonight. Actually, if I could help it, it wouldn't be anytime soon. I didn't want to chance losing her or the Twins or Damien—and I was afraid I would. (25.46)
Zoey feels like a freak for craving blood as early as she does in her new life as a vampyre fledgling, and she's terrified that her friends will find out and reject her. Yes, from a human perspective, wanting to drink blood is pretty gross. But they're all in the same boat, as potential vampyres, so maybe her friends won't judge her so harshly?
Quote #8
I looked over my shoulder to see the Twins standing besides the white-faced, open-mouth Heath, and I felt a jolt of pure happiness. They hadn't abandoned me! I wasn't alone! (28.42)
Zoey tells her friends not to come to the Dark Daughters Samhain ritual, and she's kind of harsh when she does. So she spends a bunch of time worrying that she's offended them and that they don't like her anymore… but it turns out that they've been avoiding her in order to secretly make plans to be there to support her anyway. Yay for friends showing up when you need them most.
Quote #9
I felt their loyalty and trust and acceptance like a sixth element. It filled me with confidence. (28.70)
Ever faced down a ritual circle of hungry ghosts? That's basically what Zoey asks her friends to do—and they totally come through for her. She can feel their trust and loyalty, and it comes through so strongly that it almost feels like one of the five elements. Seems like an indication of how strong their friendship is.
