How we cite our quotes: All quotations are from The Princess Bride.
Quote #1
BUTTERCUP: Despite what you think, you will be caught. And when you are, the prince will see you all hanged.
This girl is not just a pretty, pretty princess. She's got some fire in her, which is part of what attracted Westley so much to her in the first place. Here it's on display as she threatens Vizzini, Fezzik and Inigo, insisting that the prince will punish them for the abduction. Little does she know that it was the prince who commissioned it. It's the oldest story in the book. Man meets woman, man and woman agree to be married, man arranges to have woman kidnapped and murdered…
Quote #2
INIGO: When I was-a strong enough, I dedicated my life to the study of fencing, so the next time we meet, I will not fail. I will go up to the six fingered man and say, "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die."
And there you have it—one of the most famous lines in all Hollywood-dom. It's one of the greatest revenge stories ever conjured, and there have been few more satisfying moments in all cinema as the one where Inigo finally drives his sword through Count Rugen's chest. Which, now that we think about it is a little sick. Maybe we've been playing too much Call of Duty.
Quote #3
HUMPERDINCK: You truly love each other, and so you might have been truly happy. Not one couple in a century has that chance, no matter what the storybooks say. So I think no man in a century will suffer as greatly as you will.
Just because he's our villain doesn't mean he should get left out of all the vengeance fun. Humperdinck shows here that he's capable of being rattled, and even though he plans to kill Buttercup, he's not keen on the idea that two people should share something he's never been able to feel himself. So he deals with it the only way he knows how: through the use of brute physical force. Well…he pushes a lever up a handful of notches. Which is nearly the same thing.
