In The Reformed Vampire Support Group, vampires have some pretty strange family dynamics. There's Nina, who lives with her non-vampire mom; Dave, who is bummed about how he was turned into a vampire shortly after abandoning his pregnant girlfriend; Reuben, who was kidnapped away from his dysfunctional family after he became a werewolf. And then, of course, there's Barry and Dermid McKinnon, who are a father-and-son villainous pair, who both become vampires in a not-so-ideal way.
So, yeah… It turns out that an infection causing immortality and blood lust causes some weird familial issues. Go figure.
Questions About Family
- Who seems to have the most normal family relationships in the book? Why do you think this is? Give evidence from the book, yo.
- How would you characterize Nina's relationship with her mom? Why?
- Why do you think abandonment figures in so many of the characters' lives?
- Since vampires can't reproduce except by spreading the infection, how do you think a vampire family would work?
Chew on This
The most functional families in The Reformed Vampire Support Group are based on loyalty, not necessarily similarity.
