Silence
- Einar's psyched. Mr. Salisbury's been sent by Governor Brady to set up an Assay office, and needing an Assay Clerk, he's hired Einar.
- No one's really sure what an Assay Clerk is, but Einar explains that he's the guy who has to test the gold to see how pure it is.
- Mr. Salisbury even gave Einar some cash and food to hold them over until the job officially starts in the spring.
- When Einar tells the whole thing to Maria, she's not sure why he would choose Einar.
- That's the beauty of it: Einar's got too much to lose—Mr. Salisbury figured that since he's got a wife and two kids to care for, he needs to hold down a job more than any of the other gold miners around.
- Einar asks Sig to take the box—with the gun—and put it away.
- Hearing this, Maria flips out; Sig is so little and he shouldn't be touching a gun.
- But Einar tells her that Sig's got to learn to be around guns and respect them.
- When Sig gets back from putting the gun away, he asks his dad what the thing in the box is.
