The Frozen Sea
- As they ring in the new year (1900, that is), the sea freezes—it's so cold that even the locals are surprised (that's never a good sign).
- Einar feels like a fool for bringing his family to the land with "ice that leaps" or ivu as the locals call it.
- He's even more dumbfounded when he doesn't find any gold. They finally make it to where the gold is supposed to be, but there's none there for him.
- Everything is expensive in Nome because it's so far out of the way. Einar knows he's running out of money, and he's not sure it's safe for his family there either—someone was killed the other week, and his kids are the only ones around.
- With his last twenty bucks, Einar goes out and buys something, but we're not sure what.
- When Anna asks him if it's for when the food runs out, Einar says nope—instead it's for when the faith runs out. Yikes.
