The Rim of the World
- Back in Nome, there's a joke that everyone says: There are two seasons in Nome—winter and the Fourth of July.
- Even though everyone laughs, it's really tough here in the winter.
- By the Fourth of July, Maria is all better and times are good for Einar and his fam.
- Mr. Salisbury checks in with Einar at work from time to time, but he's always pleased.
- Einar is just one of those guys who likes to learn things and know things—maybe that's why the chemistry behind his work never gets to him.
- The pair chats about how no one ever makes it big with the gold rush any more; there are too many people onto it now, so it's not profitable for anyone.
- Still though, Einar will always find work since he's dedicated and willing to learn.
- One night, Wolff comes up to Einar just as he's locking up and asks the assayer to test his gold.
- Einar's already heading home for the night though, so he tells Wolff to come back the next day.
- Wolff doesn't like this one bit, and starts to argue, when some regulars happen by and ask Einar if he's okay.
- Luckily Wolff backs down, though he promises to be back in the morning.
- The guys invite Einar for a drink, but he wants to get home to his wife and kids.
