The Count of Monte Cristo Chapter 79 Summary

The Lemonade

  • Max, Valentine, and Noirtier plot and dream about how they can all be together in the future.
  • Barrois, Noirtier's trusty servant, gets thirsty and drinks some lemonade of Barrois.
  • Barrois immediately becomes gravely ill, and he dies.
  • Apparently, there is brucine in the lemonade. Noirtier is immune to brucine because he takes it everyday in tiny doses for his paralysis. And that's why he didn't die when he drank the lethal lemonade. He has built up an immunity to the bad effects of brucine.
