According to Dixon, the setting of Entwined is built on contrasts: the dark palace versus the silver-lit forest; the rules and order of mourning versus the freedom of the dancing pavilion. Or does the pavilion really represent freedom after all? Hmm… (Source)
An early draft of Entwined was set in the medieval period, but Dixon decided it was too dark (apparently there were lots of witches and blood magic), so she took inspiration from the Victorian-era mourning customs instead. (Source)
