Jellicoe Road Chapter 23 Summary

  • A boy named Sam who used live in Taylor's building shows up at McDonald's and tells her that she's supposed to be dead. Whoa. Not exactly what she wants to hear in this already emotionally intense situation.
  • Taylor makes him promise to come back to McDonald's later so they can talk.
  • At McDonald's, Sam tells Taylor that he hasn't seen her mom around in awhile. His own mother, Eve, probably will be no help at all either since her brain is fried from years of drug use.
  • Sam begins to reminisce out loud about the last time he saw Taylor. Eve had left them with her boyfriend, Les, who molested them and used them as subjects for kiddie porn.
  • When Taylor hears this, the memory comes back, and she knows this was what she told Raffaela the first night she arrived at Jellicoe School that Raffaela wouldn't remind her of.
  • Sam also tells her that her mom left town with her after the incident and returned two days later without Taylor. She told Sam that Taylor was in heaven.
  • From then on, Taylor can't stop recalling memories of a hurt little boy named Sam. She gives him some of the Club House money and Sam tells her to meet him outside a hotel later; he'll talk to his mom and find out what he can about Taylor's mom's whereabouts.
  • As they walk around town waiting for Sam, Taylor figures out what her mom meant by saying she was in "heaven." To her, Jellicoe was heaven. It was the safest place she knew to take her.
  • Sam returns and says that Tate is in a hospice up the road. Taylor quickly corrects him and says she's in a hospital.
  • Before they leave, Taylor tells Sam about Jellicoe and tells him to remember where she lives.
  • Taylor and Jonah stay at a hostel, where they get their own room.
  • Jonah tells Taylor the reason he called his school three years ago when they ran away: He had a dream where his dad spoke to him and told him that if they traveled any further, they wouldn't come back.
  • Jonah and Taylor have sex.
