The Funeral
- Vera is at her former best friend Charlie's funeral and her feelings are conflicted. She's wondering if she's allowed to continue hating on him now that he's dead.
- Her dad accompanies her to the burial and she cries and holds his hand for the first time since she was twelve.
- The reception is divided into different factions: family and close friends (that's where Vera ends up), the community, the official people (like the family doctor and principal), and finally, the Detentionheads. Those are Charlie's newer friends, the ones he ditched Vera for.
- In the middle of the Detentionhead crowd is Charlie's ex-girlfriend, Jenny Flick; she's acting like some kind of widow even though Vera knows that she's why Charlie died.
- As they drive home, Vera's dad asks her if she knows anything about what happened the night that Charlie died. She lies and says no.
- Then her dad tells her that maybe picking up extra hours at work would take her mind off of things. What a strange remedy to suggest.
