Monday, January 2nd—Night Off
- Vera calls the pizza shop to check in and see if James got arrested the previous night.
- He tells her that he got off on a warning and that he had a great time with her; he hopes they can do it again soon. Well, we'll see about that.
- Vera fixes herself a snack and goes to sit by the window, which overlooks the forest. She starts to think about Charlie and how maybe everything is her fault because she was so dead-set on not making her parents' mistakes; maybe she should have somehow made herself Charlie's girlfriend.
- Then she's cornered by her dad, who wants to have a serious conversation about James—specifically, he wants to know if she can keep working at the pizza shop without being "friendly" with James.
- Vera gets mad that her dad is comparing her to her mother so much; after all, hasn't she proven that she's more responsible?
- Her dad finally hands her a bunch of brochures about teenagers making good decisions, which Vera finds ridiculous. But she does listen while he lectures her on the evils of alcohol.
- Later that night, Vera does homework and she and her dad go to get her car from Pagoda Pizza.
